HR and Volunteering: An Elephant in the Room?

Let's talk about HR and Volunteering. It's a topic that often sparks debate: should these two functions be combined, or are they best kept separate?

Some argue that combining HR and Volunteering can streamline processes and create a more unified approach to people management. But others worry that this could lead to oversimplification or a devaluation of volunteer engagement.

My view is that there are many organisation structures in which volunteering can successfully be incorporated: This is simply one of them. Many organisations are choosing this approach, so we want to help them make a success of it for staff and volunteers alike.

Rarely, are HR leaders afforded the learning and insights required to achieve this success; it is simply assumed they have these necessary understanding. As a former People Director, this has always struck me as counter-intuitive and short-sighted.

Successful volunteering involvement often require different  cultural positioning, leadership approaches, communication approaches, psychological and societal insights as well as processes to HR.  That is not to say they cannot align, but simply that successful leadership in this area will require some additional learning to help everyone thrive.

So we have established an opportunity for HR leaders to come together with some Volunteering, HR and OD specialists who have trodden this path and to explore this learning together.

Join us at our upcoming event. We'll explore these topics in depth and share practical insights from experienced professionals.
